How Terra Mystica Scoring Works

Terra Mystica scores in two places at once. Six rounds of terraforming, building, and passing push your marker along the score track — and then, at the very end, two separate majority contests land on top of it: who owns the largest connected patch of the map, and who sits highest on each of the four cult tracks. Those majorities are where the game is usually won, and where recounts usually start. Keeping them on their own rows is the whole point of the calculator above.

1Victory Points During Game

This is simply where your marker sits on the score track when the last round finishes — everything you earned across the six rounds, already added up. It comes from the round scoring tile (which pays for a specific action that round), founding towns and taking town tiles, favor tiles, the bonus card you hold when you pass, faction abilities, and advancing your shipping and spade tracks. Remember that everyone starts the game at 20 points, so this number is never zero. Read it off the track before you disturb anything, because the three buckets below get added on top of it.

2Area Scoring

Find your largest connected group of structures on the map. The player with the biggest group scores 18 points, second biggest scores 12, and third scores 6. Connected means directly adjacent spaces, and it also counts structures linked indirectly — across a river within your shipping range, or over a bridge you built — which is what makes shipping worth so much more than it looks. Only your single largest group counts; a sprawling second cluster earns nothing here. If players tie, they add together the points for the ranks they occupy and split them evenly, rounded down.

3Cult Scoring

Each of the four cult tracks — Fire, Water, Earth, and Air — is scored separately. On every track, the player highest up scores 8 points, second scores 4, and third scores 2. That means the cults are worth up to 32 points across the board, which is why a single priest sent to the right track late in the game can swing the result. Score all four tracks, then add them together into one number. Ties work the same way as area scoring: tied players add the points for the ranks they occupy and split them evenly, rounded down.

4Resource Scoring

Whatever you didn't spend still counts a little. Convert your leftover workers and priests to 1 coin each, add them to the coins you already have, and score 1 point for every 3 coins' worth — rounded down, so a remainder of 1 or 2 is wasted. It's usually the smallest bucket on the sheet, but in a close game it's the one people forget to count, and 20 coins is a quiet 6 points.

Looking for a Terra Mystica Score Sheet?

If you came here hunting for a Terra Mystica score sheet to print, the calculator above does the same job with the math built in — one row for the score track, one for each end-game bucket, one column per player, totals handled. Because the two majority contests get their own rows, a disputed cult track only means changing one number rather than starting the whole tally again. It forgets everything when you leave, though. For a score sheet that remembers — every game, every faction, every win — Terra Mystica is one of 300+ games in the free Meeply app.

Expansions and Relatives

The Fire & Ice expansion adds new factions and a variable final scoring tile, so the end-game majority isn't always measured the same way — check the tile in play before you tally. And if you like this engine but want it in space, Gaia Project is Terra Mystica's science-fiction sibling from the same designers, with its own free score calculator on this site.

This Page Adds. Meeply Remembers.

A calculator gives you tonight's total and forgets it. Meeply keeps the whole story — every Terra Mystica game, every faction anyone played, every "the Fire cult won me that one" settled with receipts.

Terra Mystica Scoring Questions

How do you score Terra Mystica?
Start with your position on the score track after the sixth round — everyone begins at 20 points and adds to it all game from round scoring tiles, towns, favor tiles, bonus cards, and faction abilities. Then add three end-game buckets: area scoring for your largest connected group of structures (18 / 12 / 6), cult scoring for your standing on each of the four cult tracks (8 / 4 / 2 per track), and 1 point per 3 coins of leftover resources. The highest total wins.
How does area scoring work in Terra Mystica?
At the end of the game each player finds their largest connected group of structures. The largest group on the map scores 18 points, the second largest 12, and the third 6. Structures count as connected when they sit on directly adjacent spaces, and also when they are linked indirectly — across a river within your shipping range, or over a bridge you built. Only your single biggest group scores, so a second cluster on the far side of the map is worth nothing here.
How do the cult tracks score in Terra Mystica?
Each of the four cult tracks — Fire, Water, Earth, and Air — scores on its own: 8 points for the player highest on that track, 4 for second, and 2 for third. Because all four are scored, the cults are worth as much as 32 points in total, which is more than the area majority. Score each track separately and add the four results together.
What happens if players tie on a cult track or on area scoring?
Tied players add together the victory points for the ranks they're tied across and split them evenly, rounding down. Two players tied for first on a cult track share the 8 and the 4, so they take 6 each, and the next player down takes the 2. The same method applies to a tie in area scoring.
Do leftover resources score in Terra Mystica?
Yes, but modestly. Convert your remaining workers and priests to 1 coin each, add your actual coins, and score 1 point for every 3 coins' worth. It rounds down, so leftovers of 1 or 2 coins are wasted — but a fat treasury at the end of round six can still be worth several points.
What is a good Terra Mystica score?
It swings a lot with faction and player count, but a winning score usually lands somewhere between about 110 and 160. First games often finish under 100 while everyone learns their faction; once a group is comfortable, the winner is regularly past 140. What separates those games is rarely the score track — it is whether you picked up the area majority and a couple of cult firsts.
Does the Fire & Ice expansion change scoring?
Fire & Ice adds new factions and a variable final scoring tile that changes what the end-game majority is measured on, so the score track and cults work as normal but the area contest can be swapped out. Check the tile in play before you tally, and score the rest of the game exactly as usual.
What is the difference between Terra Mystica and Gaia Project?
Gaia Project is the science-fiction sibling of Terra Mystica by the same designers: the same terraforming-and-majorities engine moved into space, with a modular board, research tracks in place of the cults, and more end-game variety. If you like one you will usually get on with the other — there is a free Gaia Project score calculator on this site too.
Is there a Terra Mystica score sheet I can use online?
This page works as one: a free digital Terra Mystica score sheet with a row for the score track and one for each end-game bucket, totals done for you, for 2 to 5 players. It forgets everything when you close the tab, though — for a score sheet that remembers every game and every faction you played, Terra Mystica is one of 300+ games in the free Meeply app.
Does Meeply support Terra Mystica?
Yes — Terra Mystica is one of 300+ games with rules-aware scoresheets in the Meeply app, with a category for the in-game score track and one each for area scoring, cult scoring, and leftover resources. Free to try.
