How Scythe Scoring Works

Scythe pays out in coins across five buckets. The twist: your popularity at game end sets the coin rate for three of them, so the same board can score very differently depending on how loved your faction is.

The Popularity Tiers

Find your popularity on the track at game end. Whichever tier it lands in sets your coin rate for stars, territories, and resources — one lookup that touches three buckets at once.

PopularityCoins / starCoins / territoryCoins / 2 resources
0 – 6 low321
7 – 12 middle432
13 – 18 high543

Resources always pay per pair — count your controlled resources, divide by two rounding down, then multiply by the tier rate. Because a single popularity point can bump you a whole tier, late pushes for popularity often out-earn one more territory.

What Ends the Game

The game ends the instant any player places their 6th star on the Triumph Track — immediately, even mid-turn and even in the middle of resolving a combat or an action that would have paid out more. Placing that 6th star doesn't win the game on its own; play stops and everyone totals coins, and the richest faction takes the victory.

Here's each scoring bucket in the order the calculator lists them.

1Coins

Start with the coins already in your pile. Every coin is worth exactly 1 point, so this bucket is just your on-hand cash at the moment the game ends — including any coins you earned from combat, objectives, or Factory-card actions during play. Enter the total number of coins here.

2Stars (Popularity Tier)

Count the stars (achievement tokens) you placed on the Triumph Track — top actions like maxing power, deploying all mechs, building all structures, winning combat, and completing objectives. Each star pays 3, 4, or 5 coins depending on your popularity tier (see the tier grid below). Do the lookup once, multiply by your star count, and enter the coin payout — not the raw number of stars.

3Territories (Popularity Tier)

Count every territory you control at game end: a territory with more of your units (workers, mechs, your character) than any opponent's, plus any territory with a structure and no enemy units. The Factory tile counts as 3 territories on its own. Each controlled territory pays 2, 3, or 4 coins by popularity tier. Multiply and enter the coin payout here. Note: lakes and the Factory are handled by the standard rules — home bases never count.

4Resources (Popularity Tier)

Add up every resource (food, wood, metal, oil) sitting on territories you control, then pay per PAIR: every 2 resources is worth 1, 2, or 3 coins by popularity tier, rounding down and ignoring the odd leftover. So at the top tier, 9 controlled resources pay 4 pairs × 3 = 12 coins. Do that math and enter the coin payout here, not the raw resource count.

5Structure Bonus

At setup each player gets a hidden Structure Bonus tile that scores your built structures a specific way — coins for structures in a row, on tunnels, adjacent to your home base, on lakes, and so on. Resolve your tile against the four structures you built and enter the coins it awards. If you never built structures, or your tile scored nothing, enter 0.

Scythe Expansions

Invaders from Afar adds two new factions and pushes the table to 6–7 players, but the five scoring buckets and the popularity-tier coin rates are unchanged — more players, same math. The Wind Gambit introduces airships and shifting resolution tiles; some resolutions change how the game ends or hand out bonus coins, so read the tile in play before you total up. The Rise of Fenris is an eight-episode campaign that layers in new modules and one-time twists across a series of linked games, some of which alter scoring for that episode — follow the episode's own instructions. This calculator covers the core five-bucket scoring that every expansion builds on.

Scythe Scoring Questions

How do you score Scythe?
Scythe scores in coins across five buckets: 1 coin per coin you hold, coins per star placed, coins per controlled territory, coins per pair of controlled resources, and whatever your Structure Bonus tile awards. Three of those buckets — stars, territories, and resources — pay a rate set by your popularity tier. Add the coin payouts together and the highest total wins.
How does popularity affect scoring in Scythe?
Your popularity at game end sets the coin rate for three buckets. Low popularity (0–6) pays 3 per star, 2 per territory, and 1 per pair of resources. Middle popularity (7–12) pays 4 / 3 / 2. High popularity (13–18) pays 5 / 4 / 3. Sitting one point higher can lift an entire tier, so late-game popularity swings are often worth more than they look — the same board can score wildly differently at the top tier versus the bottom.
Do resources score in Scythe?
Yes, but only resources on territories you control, and they pay per pair. Every 2 resources is worth 1, 2, or 3 coins by popularity tier, rounding down — an odd single resource scores nothing. Resources sitting on territory you don't control at the end don't count for you.
What ends the game of Scythe?
The game ends the instant any player places their 6th star on the Triumph Track. It ends immediately — even mid-turn, even in the middle of resolving a combat or an action that would have given you more. The player who triggered it doesn't automatically win; everyone then totals coins and the richest faction takes it.
What is a good Scythe score?
Winning scores in a typical game land around 60–75 coins. A dominant game — high popularity multiplying a strong board of stars, territories, and resources — can push past 90. If you cleared 80 coins you played a very strong game.
Who wins a tie in Scythe?
The rulebook breaks ties by, in order: the tied player with the most popularity wins; if still tied, the most combat cards; then the most controlled territories; then the most controlled resources. Meeply flags the tie so you can walk the tiebreakers.
