The game ends after the generation in which Mars is fully terraformed — oceans, oxygen, and temperature all maxed. Then everyone tallies six categories. Here's what counts in each, and where the points hide.
1Terraform Rating (TR)
Terraform Rating is the backbone of every score. You start at 20, and your rating climbs one step each time you raise the temperature, add oxygen, or place an ocean tile — plus any card or standard-project effect that says 'increase your TR'. Your rating is also your income each generation, so it does double duty. At the final scoring, your end-game TR is simply added in as points, one for one. Read it straight off your player board's rating track.
2Awards
Awards reward the leaders in a category — most cities, most greeneries, highest TR, and so on. Any player can pay to fund an award (8, 14, then 20 M€ as they're claimed), and up to three can be funded per game, but funding doesn't reserve it for you. At game end, whoever leads that category scores 5 points and second place scores 2 — even if a rival funded it. Important exception: in a two-player game there is no second-place award bonus, so only the leader's 5 points are handed out. Tally the award points you actually earned and enter the total.
3Milestones
Milestones are personal achievements you lock in during the game by paying 8 M€ when you meet the requirement — building a set number of tags, tiles, or a high enough TR. A maximum of three milestones can be claimed across the whole game, and each is worth a flat 5 points to the player who claimed it. Nobody can take a claimed milestone from you, so this is the most reliable 5-point block on the board. Enter 5 for each milestone you hold (0, 5, 10, or 15).
4Game Board (Greenery Tiles)
Every greenery tile bearing your player marker is worth 1 point at game end. Greeneries also raise the oxygen level when placed (which bumps your TR at the time), but here you're only counting the tiles themselves. Ownership is what matters, not adjacency — count each of your green tiles on the board and enter the total.
5Game Board (City Tiles)
Cities score off their surroundings, not themselves. Each city tile you own earns 1 point for every greenery tile adjacent to it — and those greeneries can belong to anyone, including your opponents. A city ringed by six greeneries is worth 6 points; an isolated city in the middle of nowhere is worth 0. Check every city you own, count the greeneries touching each one, and enter the combined total.
6Cards
Add up the victory points printed on every project card in your play area. Many cards show a fixed number of points, but plenty are variable: Jovian-tag cards score per Jovian tag you hold, and cards holding microbes or animals score per resource sitting on them at the end. A handful of cards even carry negative victory points as the price of a strong effect, so your card total can dip below zero. This is where the most miscounts happen — variable and per-resource cards are easy to under- or over-count — so go card by card and total them here.
Scoring the Terraforming Mars Expansions
Prelude: Prelude cards give everyone a faster, more powerful start, but they change nothing about final scoring — you still tally the same six categories. Prelude cards with printed victory points simply fold into your Cards total.
Hellas & Elysium: These two alternate boards swap in their own milestones and awards and rearrange the tiles, oceans, and bonuses. The scoring math is identical — TR, awards, milestones, tiles, cards — only the map and the achievement lists differ.
Venus Next: Adds the Venus track alongside temperature, oxygen, and oceans, so raising Venus now bumps your TR too. It also introduces Venus-tagged cards, many of which carry their own victory points that land in your Cards total, plus a new milestone and award.
Colonies: Adds colony tiles in orbit around the outer planets for trading and resources. Most of its scoring flows through cards and the existing categories rather than adding a brand-new points row.
Turmoil: Layers a political system of ruling parties and global events over the game. Its wrinkle for scoring is that some events and an unfavorable political climate can actually decrease your Terraform Rating during a generation — so unlike the base game, your TR can move backward. The Meeply app tracks all of these categories so the arithmetic never stalls the table.
