How Grand Austria Hotel Scoring Works

Grand Austria Hotel pays out as you play rather than all at once: a guest scores the moment they check into a room, and the Emperor scores three separate times, after rounds 3, 5, and 7. Most tables track that on the scoring track and only tally the rest at the end of round 7. Whichever way you play it, these are the five buckets that make up a final total — and the two places points go the other way.

1Guest Cards

Guests sit in your cafe until you serve them the strudel, cake, wine, and coffee shown on their card. Once a guest is fully served you move them into a prepared room of the matching colour — nobles into blue, artists into yellow, citizens into red, tourists into any free room — and they pay out the victory points printed on the card, plus whatever reward the card grants. Add up the printed points on every guest who made it into a room, then subtract 5 for each guest still sitting in your cafe at the end of round 7, and enter the net figure. That subtraction is the one most tables forget, and it can quietly erase a whole round's work.

2Staff Cards

Staff cards are hired with krones and come in four flavours: a one-time benefit, a permanent effect, a once-per-round ability, and the ones that simply pay victory points at the end of the game. Only that last group belongs in this row — the receptionists, concierges, and hotel managers whose text scores at final count, usually against something on your board like rooms prepared or guests served. Resolve each of those cards against your finished hotel and total them here.

3Emperor Track

The Emperor visits three times: after rounds 3, 5, and 7. At each visit you score the value printed below the space your disk occupies on the Emperor track, then move the disk back — 3 spaces after the first visit, 5 after the second, 7 after the third. Where you land after that backward step matters too: reach the yellow area (space 3 or better) and you take the bonus on that round's Emperor tile; slide all the way down to space 0 and you take its penalty instead. Spaces 1 and 2 are neutral. This is the only row that can go negative, so the input accepts a minus sign — enter the combined result of all three visits.

4Occupied Rooms

Your hotel board scores by height. At the end of the game each occupied room in the bottom row is worth 1 point, each in the second row 2 points, the third row 3 points, and the top row 4 points. Preparing a room costs money and is what lets a guest check in at all, but an empty prepared room is not worth anything on its own here — it only pays if a guest is sleeping in it, or if one of your staff cards specifically rewards prepared rooms. Count your occupied rooms row by row and total the values.

5Leftover Krones, Dishes & Drinks

Whatever is left over at the end still counts: every krone in your purse and every dish and drink still sitting in your kitchen is worth 1 victory point each. It rewards not over-buying in the last round, and it doubles as the tiebreaker — if two players finish level on points, the one with more dishes, drinks, and krones left takes the win. How do you score Grand Austria Hotel?

How does the Emperor track score?
The Emperor scores three times — after rounds 3, 5, and 7. Each time, you take the victory points printed below the space your disk occupies, then move the disk backward: 3 spaces after the first scoring, 5 after the second, and 7 after the third. If you end up in the yellow area (space 3 or higher) you also collect the bonus on that round's Emperor tile; if you end up on space 0 you suffer that tile's penalty instead. Spaces 1 and 2 give you neither.
Do guests left in your cafe cost you points?
Yes — every guest still sitting in your cafe at the end of the game costs you 5 victory points. Guests only pay out once they have been fully served and moved into a prepared room of the right colour, so a cafe full of half-served guests at the final bell is expensive. It is worth clearing what you can in the last round, even at a discount.
How do hotel rooms score in Grand Austria Hotel?
Only occupied rooms score, and they score by height: 1 point for each occupied room in the bottom row, 2 in the second row, 3 in the third, and 4 in the top row. Preparing a room is what makes it available for a guest, but a prepared room left empty scores nothing by itself — unless a staff card in front of you says otherwise.
Do leftover money and food score at the end?
They do. Each krone you still hold is worth 1 victory point, and so is each dish and drink left in your kitchen. It is a small bucket most games, but it is also the tiebreaker, so it is worth counting exactly rather than estimating.
