How Azul Scoring Works

Azul scores as you play — the end-game bonuses just decide the winner. Here's each piece, including the floor-line penalties everyone forgets.

1Score track

Azul does most of its scoring during play: each tile you place scores 1 point on its own, or the length of every connected horizontal and vertical line it joins — a tile that extends both directions scores both lines. Floor-line penalties (−1, −1, −2, −2, −2, −3, −3) come off as they happen, and your marker never drops below zero. Enter each player's final track position here.

2Complete rows

Count each horizontal row on the wall with all five tiles placed — every one is worth 2 bonus points. Completing a row is also what triggers the end of the game, so at least one player usually has at least one.

3Complete columns

Count each vertical column with all five tiles — 7 bonus points apiece. Columns are harder to finish than rows, which is exactly why they pay more than three times as much.

4Complete colors

Count each color you've placed all five of across the wall — 10 bonus points each. The color bonus is the biggest single swing in the game and the classic way a quiet player steals the win at final scoring.

Azul Scoring Questions

How do you score Azul?
Most points are scored during play: each placed tile scores 1 point alone, or the length of every connected horizontal and vertical line it joins. Floor-line tiles subtract points as they land. At game end, add three bonuses: 2 points per complete row, 7 per complete column, and 10 per complete color.
How does tile placement scoring work?
When you move a tile to the wall, check both directions. If it touches no other tiles, it scores 1. If it extends a horizontal line, score the full length of that line; if it also extends a vertical line, score that full length too. One tile can score both.
What are the Azul end-game bonuses?
Add 2 points for each complete horizontal row, 7 points for each complete vertical column, and 10 points for each color with all five tiles on the wall. This calculator does exactly that math for you.
How do floor line penalties work?
Tiles on the floor line cost, from left to right: −1, −1, −2, −2, −2, −3, −3. Penalties apply during round scoring, and your score marker never goes below zero.
Who wins a tie in Azul?
The tied player with the most complete horizontal rows wins. If that ties too, the rulebook calls it a shared victory.
What is a good Azul score?
Casual games usually land in the 50s to 70s. Anything in the 80s is a strong game, and cracking 100 generally means you stacked multiple color and column bonuses.
